This is what I do when i have time to kill...

And so I have just begun my journey from London to Aberdeen. Have to say after all the disruption on east coast yeasterday I'm just glad to be on the train. My day didn't get off to a flying start either, as the handle of my big canvas bag snapped just as I left so I had to make do and mend. Then I had to drag my case which weighs a tonne up and down several flights of stairs (whilst getting in peoples' way). Since I have about seven and a half hours to kill, I thought I'd write a new blog. Plus it's been weeks since my last blog on The National gig, so really it's about time. As I sit here listening to Excuses Excuses by Fans Of Kate, I'm reflecting on the past year, and my god, has it been eventful.

I suppose the biggest thing to have happened in my life this year was the move to London. Although saying that it always seemed to be other people who were more anxious about it than I was. I never really got that worried. I knew it was what I wanted to do and I was determined to make it work. If I got a tenner for every time someone would comment "You'll get really homesick" or "It's not as easy to make friends in London" I'd be pretty rich. Well, as it happens I haven't missed Aberdeen once. I've missed people from there, sure, but it's never felt like home anyway. I think if I still lived there I'd have worked myself into a depression. And it's a load of rubbish that it's hard to make friends in London, if you are friendly and chatty with people it's easy. I feel so much happier where I am now and I've made some lovely friends.

I'm not sure if I've changed that much. About the only thing I can think of is that instead of being the one who looks after all the drunken friends at a party, I'm now the drunken friend being looked after (sorry Harriet). Yes, I'm talking about the Rokit Christmas Party. Oh dear. I would tell you all about it, but from about 9ish onwards I can't remember a thing. There are phots and I can't remember them being taken. The worst bit was I honestly wasn't intending to get drunk as I had to work the next day. And I don't like being one of those girls who gets themselves into a state. It isn't glamorous AT ALL. It seemed to happen so quickly. Luckily it was quite quiet at Rokit on Friday as I felt vile.

I had to include the picture above ^ purely for james' facial expression ^

And so it's just 3 days to Christmas. I can't believe it's here again, this year seems to have gone past so quickly So anyway, I'll sign off now, but I wish you all a very Merry Christmas. Hope everyone gets home alright. Love, Kez xxx

I'll Explain Everything To The Geeks.

There are many things which in my mind make up a great band. Obviously, they need to be able to come up with some great tunes, but it's more than just that. They need to be able to captivate their audience, with just the right amount of confidence to show that they are true showmen (or women as the case may be) but not so much that they can be classed as arrogant. The singer must have a voice that somehow draws you in; be it deep and melancholy or angelic and haunting. Whatever instruments the band members play, they must ultimately come up with a sound which can be described as electrifying. Something which sends that "Oh my god, this is amazing" shiver down your spine. It doesn't matter if they play a hurdy gurdy or a trombone, they can still be rock n' roll. It's all in the way they play it.

Last night I went to see The National at Brixton Academy. And I can honestly say that was one of the most amazing gigs I've ever been too. You really felt their sincerity when they thanked the crowd for helping them sell out three nights at the venue. They seemed truly humbled by the prospect that thousands of people could want to come and see them play. The set list went as follows:

 Mistaken For Strangers
 Anyone's Ghost
 Slow Show
 Squalor Victoria
 Afraid of Everyone
 Bloodbuzz Ohio
 Lemonworld
 Lit Up
 All The Wine
 Conversation 16
 Sorrow
 Apartment Story
 Abel
 Green Gloves
 England
 Fake Empire

Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks (unplugged)

It was a really special gig. I loved when they played Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks unplugged and got everyone to sing along, it felt like a really intimate gig despite there being a crowd there five thousand strong. As we came out of the gig it decided it would snow, which despite freezing me to my very core (stupidly I'd only worn a dress, cardi, tights and a leather jacket) got me in the Christmassy mood. Besides, I was still buzzing from the gig. So at 12 midnight until half two in the morning I assembled and decorated my Christmas tree. As you do when you have to get up at 9 in the morning for work the next day. Here's some videos for your viewing pleasure. Until next time, Kez xxx

So Here It Is, Merry Christmas, Everybody's Having Fun!

When I think of what makes a truly special gift, there's one thing which straight away springs to mind. Thought. If a gift has been given some thought it is immediately more special, as the person giving the gift clearly has put some time and effort into choosing it. We can all just pop to Tesco and get a Dove body wash for our friend and throw some christmassy wrapping paper around it, but it doesn't say much. Except maybe 'you need a shower'. And nobody wants to be told that.

For some, it's all about the price tag. As long as it's expensive, that's all that matters. But that's not what Christmas is about. And certainly if you're expecting anything of the sort from me then I'm afraid I shall only disappoint you as once I've paid off all my bills for the week there's very little to spare! A good gift can't be measured by cost, but by how much it'll mean to the person recieving it. There's nothing better than watching someone open a present you've bought for them, and seeing their face beam with happiness because they genuinely love it. It makes all that shopping worth it.

And so here it is, just a few weeks away from Christmas. Some of you reading this will be quietly quite smug because you have either finished your shopping already, or are just about done. But others, well, you haven't even started have you?! They very thought of Christmas shopping is probably getting you into a tizzy. You have no idea what to get for who, and where to get it from in the first place. Well my dear baffled friends, I have been searching for some lovely gift ideas for you. So I do hope that this helps.

If you're after a good book for someone, Keith Richards - Life, might just be the way to go. My friend James is always coming to work and telling us about all the things the Rolling Stone got up to, and says it's an amazing read. His life has definitely been an interesting one, so I doubt very much that anyone could get bored with this read.

The first website to try is http://www.bathandunwind.com/brands/rose-co/. For the packaging alone these gifts are brilliant. Rose and Co are a company which uses traditional recipes in all of their products and vintage styled packaging to give you the ultimate nostalgic beauty products. If there is someone in your life who does a lot of work with their hands (cook, gardener etc), treat them to one of their fine hand creams, or salves. The salves are utterly gorgeous, I highly recommend the Rose Salve. I use this as a lip balm on a daily basis and it does wonders, but it is equally as good at healing dry hands. There is also a salve specially designed for gardeners too. At just £5, this is a real bargain. Their gift sets are slightly more expensive (but not at all pricey) starting at £7.50. These consist of four bath products designed to look like pretty cupcakes (best not to eat them though, however good they may look!). These are perfect for a best friend.

A great website to try for unique gifts is Etsy. They have some really delightful jewellery and at very reasonable prices. I picked a few of my favourite pieces to show you. This is also a great site to try for men's gifts too. They have some really lovely vintage cufflinks, perfect for a dad, uncle, or grandad. For a brother or a younger man, these t-shirts are great. This seller has some really unique designs that would make a perfect gift, and they aren't expensive either. My final idea from etsy is a quilt. Although a lot of these don't come cheap, they make wonderful presents in the wintertime. Search through though, if you look hard enough you can find some under £40, like this beauty which features a lovely rose design. Perfect for your recipient to snuggle under in the cold winter evenings. This is ideal for grandparents (could even be a joint gift to gran and grandad) or really anyone special in your life.

Then there's the people who have everything, isn't there? What do you get for them? Well, why not go onto a charity website or into your local charity shop and do just this. Get a charity gift. Oxfam, for example, do gifts for £5, £10, £20 and so on. Just £11 can go towards buying mosquito nets and you get a card to say what the money was donated to so the person you're giving it to knows how they've helped. You can also add a box of fairtrade chocolates to the gift to make it that little bit sweeter. That way, the money which you would have spent on something the person really didn't need has gone to a good cause, and they'll feel good about their gift. Win win situation. Go to http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/oxfam-unwrapped for more info.

Muji is another great website. I often go to their store in Covent Garden. They are a japanese company and they sell just about everything! From beauty to stationery, furniture to fashion. I particularly like these playing cards which double up as jigsaw puzzle of London. At £5.95, they make a great gift. Click here for the muji playing cards

Another really unique gift is a book of photos hand picked by you. At Blurb.com you can upload photos, add text and compile together a really special book of memories to give as a present. Prices start from £8.95, so it's well worth looking into. Even a simple idea like compiling photos from Christmasses past with your family to give to your parents. If you go for a slightly more expensive book you can always club together with brothers and sisters (if you have some). It'll mean a lot, and it's something they can keep, and even be passed down through the generations.

And finally, if you're still not sure what to get for a certain someone, well how about this. Home baked cookies. And don't worry if you aren't a whizz in the kitchen or if you never have a lot of time. This recipe is so easy and quick to do, you could even do it on Christmas Eve and wrap them up ready for the next day.

What You'll Need:
150g (5oz) butter
150g (5oz) caster sugar
1 egg
250g (8oz) plain flour
baking trays (grease them with butter/margerine to prevent sticking)

Heat the oven to Gas 5, 190°C, 375°F. Beat the butter and sugar together
until soft and a pale, creamy colour. Gradually beat in the egg. Mix in the
flour, making a smooth dough. Once the dough is made, simply split the dough into several pieces. Roll each piece into a ball in the palm of your hand. Place on baking tray and squish the ball down so it's flatter (make sure the dough is atleast 2cm deep or it won't bake so well) and put the trays in the oven for 8-10 mins until golden brown. Once you've let them cool you can either decorate them if you're feeling particularly creative or leave plain. Then put them in nice boxes or tins and voila! A perfect gift for anyone with a sweet tooth!

I hope these ideas have helped you with your christmas shopping, or at least given you some inspiration. Make sure you check out my next blog, since I'm going to see The National on Wednesday, I do believe it will be all about that gig! Kez xxx

Brrrr, it's getting chilly out there...

Yes, it really seems like winter is taking hold now. Walking from work this
evening I could see my breath and it was so cold my head felt numb (to be fair
there's not a lot in there anyway). It can often seem like quite a thought to
have to drag out the old faithful knitted jumpers, winter coat and cosy boots
when we've gotten so used to wearing pretty floaty little dresses and sandals in
the summer sun. But my friends, wrapping up for winter needn't be a chore, it can
actually be rather fun! I will give you some of my hot picks for keeping cosy
this winter...

If you have a winter coat which has been like a dear old friend for the past few winters and is still in perfectly good nick, but just needs a bit of sprucing up, my top tip is
to get a fur collar. Be it real or faux fur (mine is real, sorry Mr Fox), this
does the trick! Not only does it look great and freshens up your coat/jacket,
but it is also really cosy. I find mine is much cosier than wearing a scarf, and it goes with everything! You can even wear it over the top of a lovely evening dress when you are going out. Mine is from Rokit, and they are very reasonable. They range from £10 to about £30, depending on the quality and whether it is real or faux fur. So head on down to Rokit Brick Lane (don't forget to say hi!) to get yours, or if that's not possible, go to http://www.rokit.co.uk/, and click on accessories.

Another key look is layering. Layering keeps you warmer, and can look amazing if you get it right. The key to layering is to go for items with different or clashing textures, patterns and colours. That way you create an instantly exciting outfit. For example, some lovely knitted leggings with a funky pattern, a pretty little dress, a check shirt and a chunky long cardi. More layers = more warmth and more fashion forward kudos to you! Topshop and H&M have got some lovely patterned leggings, and as for the check shirt and cardi, vintage shops are always the best, because they are usually quite cheap, and you get really quirky designs.

My final top tip is the full or mid length skirt/dress. For all those girls who are addicted to their dresses and skirts, winter needn't mean that that you have to banish them to the wardrobe until next spring. Just add a few extra inches to the length, and there you have it! You'll still keep warm but look fabulous doing so. If the dress/skirt is really long you can even wear your jeans underneath to keep even warmer and no-one will be any the wiser. The full and mid length dress/skirt is everywhere this season and I have to say I think they look really elegant. I still love my shorter dresses and skirts, but these make a lovely change for the winter. And the celebs like them too...

So there you have it, my three top tips for keeping cosy this winter. I think these'll come in pretty handy since some parts of Britain are getting snow right now! Oh, and don't forget your fleecy socks! They are brilliant when wearing your winter boots, or just lounging around the house. Nice cosy feet! Make sure you read my next blog, will be giving you some ideas to solve your Christmas shopping dilemmas. Kez xxx
